Postgres.app is a simple, native macOS app that runs in the menubar without the need of an installer. Open the app, and you have a PostgreSQL server ready and awaiting new connections. This article explains how to install the Microsoft ODBC Driver for SQL Server on macOS. It also includes instructions for the optional command-line tools for SQL Server (bcp and sqlcmd) and the unixODBC development headers.

The Microsoft ODBC driver for SQL Server on macOS is only supported on the x64 architecture through version 17.7. The Apple M1 (ARM64) is supported starting with version 17.8. The architecture will be detected and the correct package will be automatically installed by the Homebrew formula. If your command prompt is running in x64 emulation mode on the M1, the x64 package will be installed. If you're not running in emulation mode in your command prompt, the ARM64 package will be installed.

To install Microsoft ODBC driver 17 for SQL Server on macOS, run the following commands:

If you installed the v17 msodbcsql package that was briefly available, you should remove it before installing the msodbcsql17 package. This will avoid conflicts. The msodbcsql17 package can be installed side by side with the msodbcsql v13 package.

ODBC 13.1

Use the following commands to install the Microsoft ODBC driver 13.1 for SQL Server on OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) and macOS 10.12 (Sierra):

Driver files

The ODBC driver on macOS consists of the following components:

Resource file loading

The driver needs to load the resource file in order to function. This file is called msodbcsqlr17.rll or msodbcsqlr13.rll depending on the driver version. The location of the .rll file is relative to the location of the driver itself (so or dylib), as noted in the table above. As of version 17.1 the driver will also attempt to load the .rll from the default directory if loading from the relative path fails. The default resource file path on macOS is /usr/local/share/msodbcsql17/resources/en_US/

Troubleshooting

Some users encounter an issue when trying to connect after installing the ODBC driver and receive an error like: '[01000] [unixODBC][Driver Manager]Can't open lib 'ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server' : file not found (0) (SQLDriverConnect)'. It may be the case that unixODBC is not configured correctly to find registered drivers. In these cases, creating a couple symbolic links can resolve the issue.

Download Microsoft® ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server® - Windows, Linux, & macOS from Official Microsoft Download Center. Linux, Windows Server 2012 R2, Apple Mac OS. Before decryption, the Teradata SQL Driver for R calculates the MAC using the ciphertext, transformation name, and algorithm parameters if any, and verifies that the calculated MAC matches the expected MAC. If the calculated MAC differs from the expected MAC, then either or both of the files may have been tampered with.

Before configuring an ODBC driver on a Mac, you will need to download and install a Driver Manager, iODBC. Refer to your System Requirements documentation for iODBC versions compatible with your ODBC Driver:

For this example, we are using version 3.52.12.

Permission setup for iODBC on Mac OS

1. In Finder, from your home {username} folder, go to {username}/Library/ODBC folder and find the file named odbc.ini.
   In this blog, we only need to allow the permission in user’s folder because we are only updating value in USER DSN. If you want to use a SYSTEM DSN instead, click “Go” in the finder menu and choose “Go to Folder…” or press Shift + Command + G as shortcut. Type in /Library/ODBC and click on “Go”.
   You can find the file named odbc.ini.
   
2. Right click on odbc.ini, and choose Get Info option.
   
3. In Sharing & Permission section, ensure your user group has the permission to Read & Write. You might need administrator permission to edit this section. Click on the lock icon at bottom right corner to unlock the permission to edit the list.

This tutorial shows how to set up a data source and connect to a Microsoft^® SQL Server^® database using the Database Explorer app or the command line. This tutorial uses the Microsoft JDBC Driver 4.0 for Microsoft SQL Server to connect to a Microsoft SQL Server 2016 Express database.

Step 1. Verify the driver installation.

7. Under Connection Options, in the Name column, enter the name of an additional driver-specific option. Then, in the Value column, enter the value of the driver-specific option. Click the plus sign to specify additional driver-specific options.

8. Click . The Test Connection dialog box opens. Enter the user name and password for your database, or leave these boxes blank if your database does not require them. Click .

   If your connection succeeds, the Database Explorer dialog box displays a message indicating the connection is successful. Otherwise, it displays an error message.

9. Click . The JDBC Data Source Configuration dialog box displays a message indicating the data source is saved successfully. Close this dialog box.

2. In the connection dialog box, enter a user name and password, or leave these boxes blank if your database does not require them. Click .

   The Catalog and Schema dialog box opens.

3. Select the catalog and schema from the Catalog and Schema lists. Click .

   The app connects to the database and displays its tables in the Data Browser pane. A data source tab appears to the right of the pane. The title of the data source tab is the data source name that you defined during the setup. The data source tab contains empty SQL Query and Data Preview panes.

5. Close the data source tab to close the SQL query. In the Connections section, close the database connection by clicking .

   Note

   If multiple connections are open, close the database connection of your choice by selecting the corresponding data source from the list.
